MLK DAY / THE BLACK VOTE

AARP observed MLK Day 2020 with messages celebrating the Black Vote and the empowerment of all races and ages in all communities.

Shelton worked on the project remotely as a freelance copywriter and created the content on this page. The video and ads were posted on the AARP website and social channels to help inform and inspire their 38 million members.

Before this, I hadn’t really considered what the “Selma to Montgomery March” entailed on a human level. The kind of commitment it took to walk for 54 miles, covering 7 to 17 miles per day. Having to camp out at night in supporters’ yards. Being confronted with violence at any time. All, so Black Americans could exercise their right to vote.

I believe voting is more important today than at any time in our lifetime. Especially for the Black community. This work helps to showcase its historical importance and reminds us that the journey continues.
